I custom firmwares per la PSP ci sono fin da giugno 2006, quando Dark_AleX fece una "prova di concetto" basata sul firmware 1.50. Aggiunse qualche funzionalità extra, come autorun di homebrew, una specie di recovery mode, e altre piccolezze.
Il rischio non valeva la candela, e il custom firmware 1.50 non ebbe molto successo. Comunque, la conoscenza acquisita nell'hacking del firmware 1.50, ha reso possibile per Dark_AleX di rilasciare, tre mesi più tardi, il famoso 2.71 SE. Questo CFW (abbr. per Custom FirmWare), era eccezionale e rivoluzionario all'epoca. Infatti, per eseguire homebrew sulla PSP, all'epoca bisognava mantenere il vetusto firmware 1.50, oppure starlo a caricare con metodi difficili da salvatiaggi modificati di GTA, o con un TIFF "speciale". E quindi si usava il devhook, una specie di emulatore firmware, che lo eseguiva da memory stick. Con questo this firmware, chiunque potè finalmente aggiornare alla 2.71, per avere tutte le funzionalità nuove, come il browser web, il lettore RSS, ecc..., ma continuando ad avere la possibilità di poter eseguire homebrew (e giochi piratati). Inoltre era ossibile eseguire giochi compressi, in formato CSO!
Still 3 months later, Dark_AleX released the 3.02 OE firmware. Also this firmware gained an huge success: it permitted to use the internal Sony Playstation emulator!
How to update the PSP custom firmware:
Since the 3.90 M33 version, it is possible to update the custom firmware directly from the "network update" menu.
If you have a previous version, follow this steps:
- Download the most recent CFW version from dark-alex.org (In this example is 5.00 M33-6)
- Unzip the CFW that you downloaded from dark-alex.org (for example 500m33_6.zip), and place it in \PSP\GAME\
- You will have a folder like this: X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\eboot.pbp
- If you have a network connection, it will download automatically the needing files, otherwise:
- Download the original 5.00 version from Sony
- Rename the file as 500.pbp and place it in the same folder of the update
Now, an update screen will appear, and you are done!
